Chair Lift At Ski Resort Goes Haywire. Tossing Skiers Like Rag Dolls

Why on earth were some of the riders holding on and not jumping off the bench before it snapped and whipped them violently through the air? That one dude got tossed far as hell. He easily cleared 20 feet of air time after panicking and holding onto the chair lift like a dummy. What did he think would happen?

Those lifts are supposed to be fail-safe because they are designed and promoted as “high speed DETACHABLE” chair lifts. The chair detaches from the lift and slows to a crawl while the riders seat themselves. Well, there is clearly a flaw in this model.
