Justice Dept. seizes classified ads website

(WBAY) – Classified ad website and its affiliate websites have been seized by federal authorities, according to a banner that popped up on the website Friday.

The banner says Backpage was seized “as part of an enfocement action by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Postal Services, and the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division.”

The banner says additional information will be released Friday at 5 p.m. by the United States Department of Justice.

Backpage allows people to post free advertisements online. The website has been used for prostitution and human trafficking.

Local investigators often searched Backpage to track down cases of human trafficking in our community.

News of Backpage’s seizure comes after classified ad website Craigslist shut down its personals section, which had also been used by human traffickers.
